I read somewhere that "the state nearest Africa is Maine." Of course, the first thing I did was look at a map — and then at a globe — to try to figure out if that was true. This globe shows the Atlantic, and I can see Africa is higher than I thought and the northeast part of the United States seems tipped to the right. Yup, Maine IS closer. I'm amazed.
